Effect of deformation and grain size on austenite decomposition during quenching and partitioning of (high) silicon-aluminum steels

P. K. Kantanen et al.

Summary: The study describes the effect of austenite deformation on carbon partitioning and transformation to athermal and isothermal martensite, and bainite during quenching and partitioning (QP). It was found that deformation close to the no-recrystallization temperature refines the grain size, lowers the martensite start temperature and affects the stability of austenite during QP processing. These results can help in designing optimal QP treatments for these novel steels by corroborating the QP microstructures and their hardness through dilatation measurements and retained austenite contents at room temperature.

A new combinatorial processing route to achieve an ultrafine-grained, multiphase microstructure in a medium Mn steel

Saeed Sadeghpour et al.

Summary: A new combination of factors is employed to enhance the stabilization of austenite in a medium Mn steel, resulting in a refined multi-component microstructure. The microstructure evolution and phase fraction during processing are systematically investigated, revealing a combination of phases including martensite, pearlite, retained austenite, and carbide precipitates. By optimizing annealing parameters, an ultrafine-grained microstructure is achieved with equiaxed ferrite, retained austenite, and some fresh martensite.

Summary: The study found that increasing Nb content can enhance fine-grain strengthening effect but also promote cementite precipitation and delay recrystallization. Steel with lower Nb content showed more persistent TRIP effect during deformation process, exhibiting excellent comprehensive mechanical properties.

A new insight into annealing parameters in tailoring the mechanical properties of a medium Mn steel

Summary: This study found that the temperature-rise-period during intercritical annealing plays a significant role in controlling the mechanical properties of medium Mn steels. A longer temperature-rise-period leads to a more heterogeneous microstructure, resulting in improved yield strength and total elongation of the steel.
