Evaluation of volatile organic compounds in brown and red sub-Antarctic macroalgae

Lucas Moraes Berneira et al.

Summary: The study revealed that sub-Antarctic macroalgae release approximately 40 different compounds, with brown macroalgae containing hexanal, 2-pentylfuran, and pentadecane, while red seaweeds mainly comprised of heptadecane, hexanal, and benzaldehyde. Additionally, principal component analysis showed that the VOC compositions could differentiate between brown and red seaweeds, providing insights for potential pharmacological and biotechnological applications.
