AA 5754 aluminum alloy sheets were successfully joined by resistance spot welding in butt configuration, resulting in irregular ellipsoidal-shaped nuggets. The microstructures and mechanical properties of the butt joints were investigated, and it was found that butt joints had larger shear force compared to lap joints, with a maximum shear force of 2888 N at the interface zone.
AA 5754 aluminum alloy sheets were successfully joined by using resistance spot welding in butt configuration. The newly proposed welding method changed the heat balance conditions during the welding process, thereby affecting the macroscopic morphology of the nugget. The nugget exhibited an irregular ellipsoidal shape. Microstructures and mechanical properties of the butt joints have been investigated. The butt joint could obtain larger shear force than lap joint due to the larger diameter of the nugget under the same welding parameters. The joint fractured at the interface zone with the maximum shear force of 2888 N.
