Fluorescent graphene oxide derived from carbonized citric acid for copper(II) ions detection

Wen-Dan Li et al.

Summary: Fluorescent graphene oxide (GO) nanoparticles were synthesized via thermal carbonization of citrate acid, with the size of GO ranging from several to several hundred nanometers depending on the synthesizing temperature. The emission of green and blue light from the GO suspension could be dynamically quenched by Cu2+ ions, with the fluorescence intensity decreasing exponentially with Cu2+ concentration. The quenching mechanism was attributed to the bridging of -COOH and -OH groups on the GO surface by Cu2+, restricting vibration of edge atoms or clusters and reducing the number of luminophores. The concentration of Cu2+ could be detected by the fluorescent intensity of GO.

Polymeric carbon dot/boehmite nanocomposite made portable sensing device (Kavach) for non-invasive and selective detection of Cr(VI) in wastewater and living cells

Shubham Roy et al.

Summary: The handheld fluorometric probe 'Kavach' is designed for monitoring hexavalent chromium in industrial wastewater and living systems. It utilizes carbon dot decorated boehmite nanostructure for rapid and sensitive detection of chromium contamination. The probe shows excellent selectivity and stability in different pH and water qualities, making it a potential sensing tool for on-site low-cost detection.

Easy formation of nitrogen-doped carbon dots towards Hg2+ fluorescent measurement and multicolor intracellular imaging

Defang Xu et al.

Summary: In this study, Nitrogen-doped carbon dots (N-CDs) were successfully prepared using a hydrothermal method with broad bean and 1,2-ethanediamine as precursors. The N-CDs were found to exhibit excellent fluorescence properties and carry various hydrophilic groups on their surface. Additionally, the prepared N-CDs showed great biocompatibility, low toxicity, and chemical stability. Most notably, the N-CDs could sensitively and selectively detect heavy metal Hg2+ ions in water samples and HeLa cells.
