Synergistically integrated phosphonated poly(pentafluorostyrene) for fuel cells

Vladimir Atanasov et al.

Summary: Phosphonated polymers have been proposed as anhydrous proton conductors for fuel cells, but anhydride formation lowers conductivity. By synergistically integrating phosphonated poly(pentafluorostyrene) and maintaining protonic conductivity above 200 degrees C, advanced fuel cells with peak power densities surpassing traditional materials have been achieved. This study presents a promising pathway for utilizing phosphonated polymers in high-performance fuel cells under hot and dry operating conditions.

Enhanced self-humidification and proton conductivity in magnetically aligned NiO-Co3O4/chitosan nanocomposite membranes for high-temperature PEMFCs

A. I. Anu Karthi Swaghatha et al.

Summary: Freestanding nanocomposite membranes composed of cross-linked chitosan and magnetically active NiO-Co3O4 spinel oxide filler were successfully synthesized through the solution-casting technique. The externally applied magnetic field allowed for better alignment of the filler and enhanced intermolecular interactions between the biopolymer and filler, leading to improved physicochemical properties. Increasing the SO doping concentration resulted in substantial enhancements in various properties, such as water uptake, ion-exchange capacity, water retention, and high-temperature proton conduction, making these membranes promising for use in high-temperature proton exchange membrane fuel cells.
