Effects of tool pin thread on temperature field and material mixing in friction stir welding of dissimilar Al/Mg alloys

Tao Jiang et al.

Summary: This study investigated the effects of tool pin thread on interfacial heat generation, temperature field, material flow, and mixing in friction stir welding of Al/Mg alloys to develop a dissimilar FSW model. It was found that the pin thread primarily increased the mixing extent of the material in the shear layer, resulting in a more tortuous Al/Mg interface. The model was experimentally validated through comparisons of measured and calculated temperatures at various locations within the welded zone.

Joint formation and mechanical properties of ultrasonic-assisted transient liquid bonding of dissimilar Al/Mg with a Zn interlayer in air

Xuesong Liu et al.

Summary: In this study, ultrasonic-assisted transient liquid bonding (UATLP) was used to rapidly join dissimilar Al/Mg alloys in the air. The pure Zn interlayer was chosen to prevent the formation of Al-Mg intermetallic compounds (IMCs). The effects of bonding time on the microstructure and mechanical properties of the joints were investigated. The results show that the formation of Al-Mg IMCs can be avoided when the ultrasonic time is shorter than 3 s. However, incomplete removal of the oxide layer on the Al substrate results in the formation of Mg-Zn eutectic, MgZn, and MgZn2 structures when the ultrasonic time is shorter than 2 s. The joint strength decreases to 11 MPa when the ultrasonic time is prolonged to 6 s due to the diffusion of a large amount of Al and Mg atoms into the joint, leading to the formation of Al-Mg IMCs (Al3Mg2 and Al12Mg17).

Investigation on mechanical, tribological and microstructural properties of Al-Mg-Si-T6/SiC/muscovite-hybrid metal-matrix composites for high strength applications

Shubham Sharma et al.

Summary: The wide application of aluminium alloys in various sectors requires the enhancement of wear resistance in order to prolong its diverse spectrum of applications. This study involves fabricating a hybrid metal matrix composite of aluminium silicon carbide with muscovite/hydrated aluminium potassium silicate/aluminosilicate in order to improve mechanical characteristics and reduce wear-loss. Through the analysis of mechanical properties and wear behavior in different compositions, it was found that the wear-loss decreases linearly as the muscovite percentage was increased.

Omid Karimi-Dermani et al.

Summary: The study found that a 40μm-thick Sn interlayer was very effective in improving joint quality and strength, while increasing interlayer thickness led to a decrease in joint strength. Furthermore, increasing the number of FSW passes may significantly reduce joint strength.
