Homogenized moduli and local stress fields of random fiber composites under homogeneous and periodic boundary conditions

Shizhen Yin et al.

Summary: This study incorporates homogeneous traction and displacement boundary conditions into a hybrid homogenization theory for unidirectional composites with random fiber distributions. The study investigates the convergence of homogenized moduli and local stress field statistics with representative volume element size. The results show that fiber randomness and boundary condition type have significant effects on the statistics of local stress fields, while the choice of boundary conditions influences the location of plasticity and failure initiation at the fiber/matrix interfaces.

An advanced method for efficiently generating composite RVEs with specified particle orientation

Wenlong Tian et al.

Summary: The improved RSA algorithm efficiently generates RVEs of spheroidal particles reinforced composites with specified orientations using particle re-orientation and acceleration algorithms. Statistical functions are introduced to analyze the distributions of particle orientations and centroids in the generated RVEs.

Micromechanical analysis of UD CFRP composite lamina under multiaxial loading with different loading paths

Jiayun Chen et al.

Summary: The study investigates the influence of loading path on the failure of unidirectional carbon fibre reinforced polymer composite laminae IM7/8552, using a 3D micromechanical model based on finite element method and artificial neural network technology. Results show that under specific loading conditions, the failure strength and patterns of the RVE are independent of loading paths.

The effects of interphase parameters on transverse elastic properties of Carbon-Carbon composites based on FE model

Jian Ge et al.

Summary: The effects of the interphase between carbon fiber and pyrolytic carbon on the mechanical behaviors of unidirectional C/C composites were studied through numerical calculations and validation with AFM tests. Results show that the effective transverse properties of unidirectional C/C composites are mainly determined by the interphase modulus, and independent of the interphase thickness and Poisson's ratio.

Generation of random fiber distributions in fiber reinforced composites based on Delaunay triangulation

Weiwei Wang et al.

Summary: This paper introduces a novel method for generating random fiber distributions of carbon fiber reinforced plastic with high volume fraction. An adaptive fiber shaking module is developed to overcome issues like unreasonable resin-rich zones, with a maximum fiber volume fraction reached at 67.43%. Finite element analysis shows a maximum absolute error of 7.354% in elastic properties when compared with experimental and simulation results.
