In Vitro Shoot Culture of Sesuvium portulacastrum: An Important Plant for Phytoremediation

Weihong He et al.

Summary: Sesuvium portulacastrum is an important coastal halophyte used for phytoremediation and erosion control. However, traditional propagation methods are not sufficient and may lead to disease spread. This study established an efficient protocol using growth regulators to induce axillary shoots and produce disease-free plants through microcutting and rooting techniques. This provides a rapid and reliable method for the propagation of genetically identical and healthy S. portulacastrum plants.

Simon Sharp et al.

Summary: The study in Victoria, Australia investigated the occurrence and concentration of PFAS in game ducks and the environment, revealing a variety of short- and long-chain carboxylic and sulfonic acids. Findings showed generally low concentrations of PFOS in wetlands, but higher concentrations near contaminated sources such as defense bases or urban areas.

A translocation analysis of organophosphate pesticides between surface water, sediments and tissues of common reed Phragmites australis

Chijioke Olisah et al.

Summary: This study revealed that P. australis in the contaminated Sundays Estuary has the ability to absorb organophosphate pesticides (OPPs) and bioaccumulate these compounds, transferring them from roots to leaves. The insignificant correlation between log BSAF and log K-ow and log TFr-l and log K-ow indicates that the uptake of OPPs by P. australis tissues is not dependent on log Kow. The findings suggest that P. australis has the potential to effectively remove OPPs from contaminated water and sediment.

Summary: This review discusses the challenges of disposing plant biomass containing heavy metals (HMs) in phytoremediation technology, and introduces various disposal and utilization methods such as heat treatment, extraction treatment, microbial treatment, compression landfill, and synthesis of nanomaterials. Each disposal method has different operation processes and technical parameters, with the potential for migration and transformation of HMs. Some methods may also generate by-products. The paper aims to provide reference for choosing and using the appropriate method for treating plant biomass with HMs after phytoremediation.

Crop straw-derived biochar alleviated cadmium and copper phytotoxicity by reducing bioavailability and accumulation in a field experiment of rice-rape-corn rotation system

Yutong Zong et al.

Summary: The study found that biochar can effectively control the bioavailability and translocation of heavy metals in soil, reducing their accumulation in crops. Application of biochar led to an increase in soil pH, organic carbon, and cation exchangeable capacity, with rice husk biochar showing the most significant effects. The sequential extraction also showed changes in the exchangeable and residual fractions of heavy metals under biochar treatments.

Summary: The study investigated the effects of pruning on effluent concentrations of nitrogen, phosphorus, and metals in stormwater biofilters planted with Carex appressa and Ficinia nodosa. Results showed species-specific differences in nutrient removal, with pruning treatments affecting nitrogen oxide removal in F. nodosa, but not C. appressa. Pruned plants showed high removal rates of total N and P, indicating that pruning may significantly impact long-term nutrient removal in biofilter systems.

Metal(loid) uptake and partitioning within the saltmarsh halophyte, Juncus kraussii

Taylor J. Stein et al.

Summary: The investigation in SE Australia showed that halophytic saltmarsh rush, Juncus kraussii, has the ability to restrict metal(loid) movement into the root system but exhibits elevated translocation of certain metals between roots and culms, particularly for Pb and Zn. Despite barriers for uptake into below-ground tissues, most metal(loid)s were accumulated to the roots with environmental dose, showing linear relationships between root and culm.

Summary: The study examined the uptake and distribution patterns of metal(loid)s in Suaeda australis from three highly urbanised estuaries in New South Wales, Australia. The most contaminated estuary was found to be Sydney Olympic Park, followed by Hunter Wetlands and Lake Macquarie. Root uptake was greater for essential metals Cu and Zn, as well as non-essential metal Cd and metalloid Se, while lower for Pb and As. Significant barriers for translocation from roots to stems were identified, while unrestricted flow from stems to leaves was observed for all metal(loid)s.
