Large-scale sediment toxicity assessment over the 15,000 km of coastline in the Yellow and Bohai seas, East Asia

Kyuwon Hwang et al.

Summary: This study used Vibrio fischeri bioassay to evaluate the ecotoxicological profiles associated with sedimentary PTSs contamination in the Yellow and Bohai seas. The results showed that organic extracts induced stronger toxicities than aqueous samples, and several PTSs measured in the samples significantly contributed to the observed bacterial inhibition. Salinity was identified as a key environmental variable representing sample toxicities.

Perfluoroalkyl acids in rapidly developing coastal areas of China and South Korea: Spatiotemporal variation and source apportionment

Bin Shi et al.

Summary: Polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) are recognized as emerging contaminants that have captured worldwide attention due to their persistent and bioaccumulative characteristics. This study detected 15 PFASs in major rivers of rapidly developing coastal areas of China and South Korea, showing significant variations in concentrations and compositions among different regions. Time-trend analysis revealed a decrease in total PFASs concentrations in both China and South Korea, while the proportion of short-chain PFASs increased.
