Discovery and quantification of plastic particle pollution in human blood

Heather A. Leslie et al.

Summary: Plastic particles are widespread pollutants in the environment and food chain, and this study successfully developed a method to measure the presence of plastic particles in human blood. The study found four high production volume polymers in blood samples and demonstrated that plastic particles can be taken up by the human bloodstream.

Detection of microplastics in human lung tissue using μFTIR spectroscopy

Lauren C. Jenner et al.

Summary: Airborne microplastics (MPs) have been found to have increased concentrations in areas with high human population and activity, especially indoors. This study analyzed human lung tissue samples and identified 39 MPs in 11 out of 13 samples, with an average concentration of 1.42 +/- 1.50 MP/g of tissue. The most abundant polymer types were polypropylene, polyethylene terephthalate, and resin. The study also found that MPs were present in all regions of the lung, with significantly higher levels in the lower region compared to the upper and middle regions. These findings suggest that inhalation is a route of exposure for environmental MPs.

Summary: This review highlights the extensive use of Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy in microplastic (MP) pollution research since 2004. Over 400 research papers on FTIR techniques in MP pollution research from 2010 to 2019 were identified, focusing on MP characterization, fate, and transport in various environmental matrices. The review provides insights into the current application of FTIR spectroscopy in MP research and future challenges for understanding the risk of MPs.

Impact of weathering on the chemical identi fi cation of microplastics from usual packaging polymers in the marine environment

V Fernandez-Gonzalez et al.

Summary: Plastics disposed into the environment undergo degradation through various agents, making it crucial to correctly identify and quantify them in environmental monitoring. Different types of polymers exhibit distinct degradation pathways and products during aging, requiring individual study. Including spectra of weathered polymers in spectral libraries for reliable identifications in microplastics pollution studies is critical.

Insight into chain scission and release profiles from photodegradation of polycarbonate microplastics

Yanqi Shi et al.

Summary: Bisphenol A polycarbonate is a widely used engineering plastic, but excessive usage leads to the production of plastic wastes and high risks of chemical release. This study found that PC microplastics undergo photoaging in aquatic environment, releasing organic compounds such as BPA, which may pose potential risks to the environment and biota.

The fate of plastic in the ocean environment - a minireview

Chloe Wayman et al.

Summary: Plastics in the marine environment pose a significant threat to ocean life, especially smaller plastic particles that can be ingested by marine biota. This leads to a dramatic increase in ocean plastic littering and harmful effects on marine organisms. Degradation, volatile compound release, and oxidation are the main mechanisms of plastic deterioration in the ocean.
