Marine biofouling organisms on beached, buoyant and benthic plastic debris in the Catalan Sea

Arnau Subias-Baratau et al.

Summary: This study examines fouling communities on different types of plastic debris in the Catalan Sea and characterizes the plastic type. The results show that plastic debris hosts diverse fouling communities, potentially due to the chemical structure and surface properties of the plastic. The presence of catshark egg cases suggests implications for their dispersal. Further studies at lower taxonomic levels are needed to detect new species introduction and potential invasive species associated with plastic debris.

The Miseno Lake (Central-Western Mediterranean Sea): An Overlooked Reservoir of Non-Indigenous and Cryptogenic Ascidians in a Marine Reserve

Riccardo Virgili et al.

Summary: This study investigates the taxonomic composition, distribution pattern, and cover of ascidians in the Miseno Lake, a marine reserve in the central-western Mediterranean Sea. The results reveal the Miseno Lake as a major hotspot of non-indigenous and cryptogenic ascidians. DNA barcoding confirms the identification of multiple taxa and identifies a new clade within the Distaplia bermudensis species complex. The analysis also shows the relationship between the abundance of non-indigenous species and the availability of hard substrates, depth, and water body connectivity. This study provides a baseline for evaluating future shifts in ascidian communities and emphasizes the importance of continuous monitoring of non-indigenous species.

Cohabiting with litter: Fish and benthic assemblages in coastal habitats of a heavily urbanized area

Lucia Rizzo et al.

Summary: Research revealed that most of the benthic litter accumulates on soft bottoms, while rocky substrata are least affected, despite being particularly threatened by sea-based pollution. The study also found that the highest biodiversity was observed on rocky bottoms, hosting notable biogenic formations, even though the area has been historically affected by anthropogenic activities.

Summary: The study found that the Mediterranean red coral can successfully colonize and grow on seafloor plastic litter, providing a new possibility for using plastic in restoration activities for the coral. However, this approach may have adverse effects on the population dynamics of the coral.

Fouling organisms in marine litter (rafting on abiogenic substrates): A global review of literature

Alain Alves Povoa et al.

Summary: Research shows that marine litter can have underestimated consequences on the marine environment through rafting, with a lack of studies on rafting in the Southern Atlantic. The main fouling organisms transported on detritus include algae, barnacles, bryozoans, mollusks, and polychaetes. Standardized methods for collecting marine litter and identifying pollutants are recommended for more accurate comparisons in future studies.

Federica Ferrigno et al.

Summary: The study evaluated the impact of anthropogenic activities on coral structuring species in the Mediterranean Sea along the Campania coast, including the distribution of fishing gear and marine litter. The results showed regional differences in CSS density and impact levels, mainly influenced by the composition of coral populations and environmental conditions in each area.

Commercial catches and discards composition in the central Tyrrhenian Sea: a multispecies quantitative and qualitative analysis from shallow and deep bottom trawling

Francesco Tiralongo et al.

Summary: This study investigated the seasonal composition of catches and discards of bottom trawls operating at different depths in the central Tyrrhenian Sea. The results showed that discards were higher in shallow than in deep trawling, suggesting that the latter is more efficient in catching fishery resources for human consumption.
