Accelerated degradation of low-density polyethylene in air and in sea water

Anthony L. Andrady et al.

Summary: This study investigates the accelerated weathering of LDPE laminates exposed to ultraviolet radiation in air and seawater. The oxidation on weathering is diffusion-controlled and localized to a thin surface layer in both environments. The concentration profiles of oxidation products suggest that the thickness of this layer is too small to be detected in seawater weathered samples. Comparison with a naturally weathered polyethylene microplastic pellet highlights the similar depth profile. The impact of diffusion-controlled oxidation on the mechanical integrity of LDPE is also discussed, particularly in relation to the retardation of weathering degradation in seawater due to low dissolved oxygen concentrations.

Understanding plastic degradation and microplastic formation in the environment: A review

Kai Zhang et al.

Summary: Plastic waste pollution is a global issue that poses a potential threat to ecosystems and human health, but knowledge on plastic environmental degradation and microplastic formation is still limited. Future research should further study the key factors influencing plastic degradation to predict the fate of plastics in different environments.

Evaluating optimal removal of derelict blue crab pots in Virginia, US

Andrew M. Scheld et al.

Summary: The study focuses on the impact of derelict fishing gear on the blue crab fishery and the effectiveness of removal programs. It found that removing derelict gear can significantly increase catch efficiency and harvest, but the improvements only last for one year. The research highlights the potential value and benefits of removing derelict fishing gear for the fishery.

Fouling organisms in marine litter (rafting on abiogenic substrates): A global review of literature

Alain Alves Povoa et al.

Summary: Research shows that marine litter can have underestimated consequences on the marine environment through rafting, with a lack of studies on rafting in the Southern Atlantic. The main fouling organisms transported on detritus include algae, barnacles, bryozoans, mollusks, and polychaetes. Standardized methods for collecting marine litter and identifying pollutants are recommended for more accurate comparisons in future studies.

The fate of plastic in the ocean environment - a minireview

Chloe Wayman et al.

Summary: Plastics in the marine environment pose a significant threat to ocean life, especially smaller plastic particles that can be ingested by marine biota. This leads to a dramatic increase in ocean plastic littering and harmful effects on marine organisms. Degradation, volatile compound release, and oxidation are the main mechanisms of plastic deterioration in the ocean.
