A Megathrust earthquake as source of a Pre-Colombian tsunami in Lesser Antilles: Insight from sediment deposits and tsunami modeling

L. Cordrie et al.

Summary: No megathrust earthquakes similar to Sumatra in 2004 or Japan in 2011 have been reported in the Lesser Antilles subduction zone. However, large tsunamis have been observed due to strong intraplate earthquakes or transoceanic events. Recent studies have identified prehistoric tsunami deposits, indicating a large event or cluster of events about 500 to 800 years ago. Geological records and tsunami modeling suggest that these events may have been caused by Megathrust or outer-rise earthquakes. The occurrence of such events in the past raises concerns about future threats in populated and touristic regions.

A 1600 year-long sedimentary record of tsunamis and hurricanes in the Lesser Antilles (Scrub Island, Anguilla)

M. Biguenet et al.

Summary: The study identified sandy layers in the sedimentary environment of the Lesser Antilles which could be tsunami deposits, as well as recorded historical hurricane events. The long-term record shows similarities with that of the Bahamas, indicating an antiphase relationship between periods of intense hurricane activity and the northeastern US coast. This regional comparison may provide evidence for a latitudinal forcing of hurricane tracks through time in relation to climate fluctuations.

A tsunami deposit at Anse Meunier, Martinique Island: Evidence of the 1755 CE Lisbon tsunami and implication for hazard assessment

Raphael Paris et al.

Summary: This study presents the results of paleo-tsunami investigation in marshes of the southern and eastern coasts of Martinique Island (Lesser Antilles, France). A sand unit dated 1726-1813 cal. CE at 30 cm depth at Anse Meunier represents the most convincing evidence of high-energy coastal flooding of the last 5000 years on the island. Sedimentological analyses combined with tsunami simulations demonstrate that this sand deposit likely corresponds to the 1755 CE Lisbon transatlantic tsunami.
