Chemical characterization and biochemical activity of polysaccharides isolated from Egyptian Ulva fasciata Delile

Madelyn N. Moawad et al.

Summary: This study provides updated information on the isolation of ulvan from the green alga Ulva fasciata Delile in Egypt and evaluates its biological activities. The results show that FDWNaOH is the most effective fraction with antifouling property, while F-IHCl and FDWNaOH exhibit high antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activities, respectively.

Summary: The study found that three polysaccharides extracted from seaweed have significant effects on macrophages, especially UPP-1, which can promote cell proliferation, phagocytic activity, nitric oxide release, and cytokine secretion. Furthermore, UPP-1 also affects the genes and metabolism of macrophages, involving pathways such as amino acid synthesis, glycerophospholipid metabolism, and carbon metabolism.

Summary: A neutral ginger polysaccharide fraction (NGP) isolated from ginger was found to have a low molecular weight primarily consisting of glucose, with immunomodulatory activity on RAW264.7 cells. NGP could enhance macrophage proliferation, increase immune substance production, and potentially serve as an immune agent.

Effects of low molecular weight polysaccharides from Ulva prolifera on the tolerance of Triticum aestivum to osmotic stress

Summary: Polysaccharides derived from seaweeds can enhance wheat resistance to osmotic stress by promoting seedling growth and increasing antioxidant capacity. Exogenously applied low molecular weight polysaccharides can regulate stress-related gene expression and promote proline accumulation, ultimately improving plant response to environmental stressors.
