Controls on compactional behavior and reservoir quality in a Triassic Buntsandstein reservoir, Upper Rhine Graben, SW Germany

Benjamin Busch et al.

Summary: The main reservoir quality controls in Triassic Buntsandstein deposits in the Upper Rhine Graben and surrounding outcrops in Germany and France are discussed. The study emphasizes the importance of detrital grain size, authigenic cements, and illite textures as key factors affecting reservoir quality in this lithology.

Impact of Grain-Coating Clays on Porosity Preservation in Paleocene Turbidite Channel Sandstones: Nelson Oil Field, UK Central North Sea

Abdulwahab Muhammad Bello et al.

Summary: This study investigates the depositional characteristics, grain-coating clays, and diagenesis in controlling the reservoir quality evolution of turbidite-channel sandstones in the Forties Sandstone Member. The results demonstrate the impact of grain size and clay content on reservoir porosity, as well as the role of clay coating in preventing quartz cementation. The study also suggests the potential of the Forties Sandstone Member for CO2 storage, but highlights the need for experimental research to maintain borehole integrity in the face of dissolution of chemically unstable minerals.

High-resolution X-ray diffraction datasets: Carbonates

Abduljamiu O. Amao et al.

Summary: X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis is a versatile and reliable method for identifying minerals in solid samples. However, obtaining suitable datasets for research purposes is challenging. The researchers have carefully selected and curated a dataset containing 1680 samples collected from carbonate-rich rock formations in Spain, Italy, and Saudi Arabia. This dataset will be valuable for geoscientists, mineralogists, solid-state chemists, and data scientists alike.

Role played by clay content in controlling reservoir quality of submarine fan system, Forties Sandstone Member, Central Graben, North Sea

Abdulwahab Muhammad Bello et al.

Summary: Proximal to distal fan changes in sediment grain size, clay content, and clay coatings are key factors affecting the reservoir quality of submarine fan sandstones. The study showed that depositional facies and diagenesis both impact reservoir quality, with proximal-fan amalgamated sandstones having better quality than distal-fan mud-prone facies. Pore-filling clays between 10 and 30% have a negative effect on reservoir quality, while detrital clays and authigenic clay coatings can inhibit quartz cement precipitation.

Reservoir Quality of Upper Jurassic Corallian Sandstones, Weald Basin, UK

Dinfa Vincent Barshep et al.

Summary: The Upper Jurassic Corallian sandstones of the Weald Basin in the UK are important onshore reservoirs with potential for carbon capture and storage as well as hydrogen storage. These rocks exhibit low to moderate porosity mainly due to porosity loss caused by calcite cementation.
