COVID-19 and coagulation dysfunction in adults: A systematic review and meta-analysis

Jing Lin et al.

Summary: The meta-analysis found that platelet, d-dimer, and fibrinogen were significantly associated with the severity of COVID-19. However, there was no clear correlation between activated partial thromboplastin time or prothrombin time and the severity of COVID-19. These results suggest that coagulation dysfunction is closely related to the severity of COVID-19, with low platelet, high d-dimer, and fibrinogen potentially serving as risk indicators for disease progression.

Antiviral and Antimicrobial Nucleoside Derivatives: Structural Features and Mechanisms of Action

A. A. Zenchenko et al.

Summary: The emergence of new viruses and resistant strains of pathogenic microorganisms has driven the search for new drugs. Nucleosides are a promising class of natural compounds, with over a hundred drugs already developed from them, including antiviral, antibacterial, and antitumor agents. The review examines the structural and functional features of known nucleoside analogs with antiviral, antibacterial, or antiprotozoal activity, focusing on the mechanisms of action and the development of new drug strategies.

Risk and predictive factors of prolonged viral RNA shedding in upper respiratory specimens in a large cohort of COVID-19 patients admitted to an Italian reference hospital

Annalisa Mondi et al.

Summary: This study found that COVID-19 patients with lymphopenia, severe respiratory disease, comorbidities, and elevated D-dimer levels upon admission were more likely to experience prolonged viral shedding. Prompt hospitalization and achieving viral clearance were associated with better clinical outcomes.

Favipiravir for the treatment of patients with COVID-19: a systematic review and meta-analysis

Toshie Manabe et al.

Summary: The study suggests that favipiravir shows promising efficacy in treating patients with COVID-19, inducing viral clearance within 7 days and contributing to clinical improvement within 14 days. The drug is especially effective for patients with mild-to-moderate illness. However, additional well-designed studies are needed to determine the optimal dosage and duration of treatment.

Mustafa Mahmood Eid

Summary: The case describes a 20-year-old man with co-infection of malaria and COVID-19, who improved after treatment with antimalarial medications and supportive therapy. More studies are needed on this co-infection to better understand its implications.
