Domain Formation in Charged Polymer Vesicles

Kaushik Chakraborty et al.

Summary: Microphase separation can occur on a polymersome membrane surface, depending on the mixture of charged and uncharged diblock copolymers and salt concentration. Increasing charged copolymer concentration leads to higher elastic properties, decreased membrane thickness, and increased membrane overlap. Large-scale simulations of polymersomes provide insight into the growth of domains in cells.

Quantification of Mono- and Multivalent Counterion-Mediated Bridging in Polyelectrolyte Brushes

Turash Haque Pial et al.

Summary: The study found that bridging interactions in polyelectrolyte brushes are not solely dependent on the counterion valence, but also on the fraction of counterions physically condensed on the PE backbone and the size of the counterion solvation shell. These mechanisms ensure that certain monovalent counterions exhibit stronger bridging interactions than certain multivalent counterions, and counterions of identical valences show different bridging interactions.

Conformation and Ionization Behavior of Charge-Regulating Polyelectrolyte Brushes in a Poor Solvent

Jiaxing Yuan et al.

Summary: Sparse polyelectrolyte brushes exhibit a monotonic change in thickness as a function of solvent quality and solution pH, while dense brushes show more complex behavior with unexpected reexpansion observed when the effective segment-segment attraction strength is further increased. In the latter case, strong attraction in polymer segments leads to the formation of large, interchain, cylindrical aggregates, increasing the brush thickness.

Folding of Sequence-Controlled Graft Copolymers to Subdomain-Defined Single-Chain Nanoparticles

Jiyun Nam et al.

Summary: Inspired by protein folding, a methodology was developed for the precision synthesis of hairy polymer nanoparticles, achieving unprecedented control over structural parameters. The molecular information written on the 1D graft copolymer was translated into the 3D globular polymer nanoparticle through a single-chain collapse process, similar to protein folding. Different side chains formed distinct subdomains in the sterically congested nanoparticle state and further self-assembled into micellar aggregates in a selective solvent.
