Understanding the Structure-Polymerization Thermodynamics Relationships of Fused-Ring Cyclooctenes for Developing Chemically Recyclable Polymers

Junfeng Zhou et al.

Summary: This study reveals that fusing four- and five-membered rings into cyclooctene can reduce the ring strain energies of the monomers and affect the enthalpy changes of polymerization. Despite the narrow range of enthalpy changes, different monomers exhibit varying ceiling temperatures at different concentrations. Furthermore, the presence of remote geminal substituents can influence the depolymerization temperature, even when not directly attached to the cyclooctene.

Highly Reactive Cyclic Carbonates with a Fused Ring toward Functionalizable and Recyclable Polycarbonates

Wei Zhang et al.

Summary: Monomer design is crucial for the development of polymers with desired thermal properties and chemical recyclability. In this study, a class of monomers with specific cyclic structures was prepared to obtain high-performance polycarbonates. The resulting polymers can be completely depolymerized and repolymerized, demonstrating a potential route for chemical recycling.

Design principles for intrinsically circular polymers with tunable properties

Changxia Shi et al.

Summary: This perspective discusses design principles for next-generation kinetically trapped, intrinsically circular polymers that can be depolymerized to their monomer state. The principles aim to achieve both the ideal shortest chemical circularity and tunable performance properties. By considering thermodynamics, kinetics, strategies, predictive modeling, and life-cycle assessment, the article presents key challenges and opportunities for sustainable development of iCPs.

Olefin metathesis-based chemically recyclable polymers enabled by fused-ring monomers

Devavrat Sathe et al.

Summary: A novel chemically recyclable polymer with excellent thermal stability and tunable mechanical properties has been reported, synthesized through ring-opening metathesis polymerization of cyclooctene and trans-cyclobutane. The fused-ring monomer enables the conversion of non-depolymerizable polycyclooctene into a depolymerizable polymer, offering potential as next-generation sustainable materials.

Chemically recyclable thermoplastics from reversible-deactivation polymerization of cyclic acetals

Brooks A. Abel et al.

Summary: The study introduces a reversible-deactivation CROP method using a commercial initiator and catalyst to synthesize poly(1,3-dioxolane) with comparable tensile strength to some commodity polyolefins. Depolymerization of PDXL using strong acid catalysts efficiently returns monomer, even from a waste mixture of commodity plastics. This efficient polymerization method offers a tough thermoplastic material that can undergo selective depolymerization to monomer.
