Monolithic Integration of Metalens in Silicon Photomultiplier for Improved Photodetection Efficiency

Soh Uenoyama et al.

Summary: This study reports the monolithic integration of a metalens with a single-photon avalanche diode (SPAD) to improve the photon detection efficiency (PDE) of silicon photomultipliers (SiPMs). The experiments demonstrate significant improvements in PDE and robustness, as well as improved timing resolution. The study also shows the potential versatile application of metalenses based on low-cost complementary metal-oxide semiconductor processes.

Large-Scale Parametrized Metasurface Design Using Adjoint Optimization

Mahdad Mansouree et al.

Summary: Optical metasurfaces are planar structures made up of subwavelength meta-atoms that can manipulate incident light in various ways. Efficient design of metasurfaces requires accurate modeling of the responses and interactions among the meta-atoms. Traditional methods approximate the response of each meta-atom based on a meta-atom in a periodic array, which is accurate for slowly varying metastructures but not for rapidly changing metasurfaces where complex interactions among meta-atoms occur.

Electrically Actuated Varifocal Lens Based on Liquid-Crystal-Embedded Dielectric Metasurfaces

Melissa Bosch et al.

Summary: An ultrathin electrically controlled varifocal lens based on liquid crystal encapsulated dielectric metasurfaces is capable of continuous zoom and up to 20% total focal shift. The concept of LC-based metalens is experimentally verified through the design and fabrication of a bifocal metalens, allowing high-contrast switching between two discrete focal lengths upon application of a voltage bias. Due to their ultrathin thickness and adaptable design, LC-driven dielectric metasurfaces offer new opportunities for compact varifocal lensing in a variety of modern imaging applications.
