Identifying managerial legacies within conservation corridors using remote sensing and grasshoppers as bioindicators

K. Jurie Theron et al.

Summary: Biodiversity conservation requires effective management of key areas, including natural grassland conservation corridors, which improve landscape connectivity and mitigate fragmentation. Grasshoppers were used as indicators, showing positive responses to historic grassland activity and the important role of habitat heterogeneity for maintaining diversity. Satellite imagery is effective for monitoring grasshopper responses to vegetation changes within corridors.

The contribution of roadsides to connect grassland habitat patches for butterflies in landscapes of contrasting permeability

Christina Fischer et al.

Summary: High-value roadsides play an important role in improving landscape permeability. Increasing the ratio of high-value roadsides can enhance both structural and functional connectivity in landscapes with low permeability. In landscapes with high permeability, roadsides only support movement of specialized species. Therefore, land management should focus on the preservation and restoration of semi-natural grasslands.

Producing wood at least cost to biodiversity: integrating Triad and sharing-sparing approaches to inform forest landscape management

Matthew G. Betts et al.

Summary: Forest loss and degradation pose the greatest threats to global biodiversity, and finding a balance between conservation and wood production remains a challenge. Expanding high-yielding tree plantations could provide more forest land for protection, but leads to reduced biodiversity, while adopting extensive ecological management may better simulate natural forest structures with compromised wood yields.
