Increasing disparity between Society for Vascular Surgery guidelines for infrarenal abdominal aortic aneurysm repair and real-world practice

Ian Schlieder et al.

Summary: The study found that over the past 12 years, there has been an increasing proportion of repairs for iAAAs smaller than 5.5 cm, particularly with endovascular repair (EVAR) showing a higher percentage. The choice of surgical approach may be related to the lower complexity and operative mortality for repairs of smaller aneurysms. Therefore, it may be time to re-examine the current guidelines for iAAA repair.

Clinical Significance of Increased Computed Tomography Attenuation of Periaortic Adipose Tissue in Patients With Abdominal Aortic Aneurysms

Summary: The study found that periaortic adipose tissue inflammation measured by MDCTA could serve as an independent predictor of progression in asymptomatic AAA. The study also identified baseline AAA diameter and PAAI as predictors of AAA progression rate.

The Short-term Predictive Value of Vessel Wall Stiffness on Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm Growth

Ulver S. Lorenzen et al.

Summary: This study, based on data from the AORTA trial, found that AAA vessel wall stiffness was not predictive of aneurysm growth during a 1-year follow-up period. Despite the rigorous ultrasound protocol used, stiffness remained unchanged and did not correlate significantly with aneurysm growth. There is a need for new and subtle methods to supplement diameter measurement for improved AAA risk assessment.
