Reducing Kapitza resistance between graphene/water interface via interfacial superlattice structure

Xiaoyi Peng et al.

Summary: This study investigates the effect of interfacial superlattice structures on the Kapitza resistance between a graphene/water interface through molecular dynamics simulations. The results show that introducing interfacial superlattices can significantly reduce the Kapitza resistance. The analysis suggests that this improvement is mainly due to the enhanced phonon scattering rate in the interfacial graphene layer, which increases the thermal resistance between the graphene layer and its neighboring layer.

Heat transfer enhancement analysis of electrohydrodynamic solid-liquid phase change via lattice Boltzmann method

Cai-Lei Lu et al.

Summary: In this study, a lattice Boltzmann method is extended for EHD solid-liquid phase change in a square cavity. The analysis shows that Coulomb force and buoyancy force play key roles in enhancing heat transfer, especially for melting from the left side. The dependence of heat transfer enhancement on electric Rayleigh number Ta is also investigated, showing a decreasing function of Ta for melting time.

Effect of Graphite Layers on the Conformation and Thermal Conductivity of n-octadecane: A Molecular Dynamics Study

Tiantian Zhang et al.

Summary: The study investigated the thermal conductivity improvement of the paraffin and graphite composite PCMs at a micro-scale through molecular dynamics simulation. It analyzed the conformation characteristics of molecules with rising temperature and the structure and dynamics characteristics of the paraffin PCM, including structural evolution, self-diffusion coefficient, phase change properties, and thermal conductivity. The results showed the significant influence of graphite layers on the conformation of alkane molecules, as well as the differences in self-diffusion coefficient and thermal conductivity between amorphous and crystal octadecane.

Phonon magic angle in two-dimensional puckered homostructures

Yufeng Zhang et al.

Summary: The emergence of twistronics provides a novel platform to modulate band structures, while the concept of phonon engineering is still lacking. By extending 'twistnonics' to 2D puckered materials, a 'phonon magic angle' has been discovered through molecular dynamics simulation. This novel phenomenon is attributed to confined vdW potential energy and weak phonon anharmonicity in perfectly arranged lattice structures, which can effectively regulate both in-plane and out-of-plane thermal transport properties.

Molecular Dynamics Simulations of Wettability, Thermal Transport, and Interfacial Liquid Structuring at the Nanoscale in Polar Solid-Liquid Interfaces

C. Ulises Gonzalez-Valle et al.

Summary: Engineering nano- and microscale systems for water filtration, drug delivery, and biosensing is enabled by the intrinsic interactions of ionic compounds in aqueous environments and limited by our understanding of these polar solid-liquid interfaces. Particularly, the fundamental understanding of the electrostatic properties of the inner pore surface of alumina nanoporous membranes could lead to performance enhancement for evaporation and filtration applications. This investigation reports on the modeling and characterization of the wettability and thermal transport properties of water-alumina interfaces. Abnormal droplet spreading was observed while using documented modeling parameters for water-alumina interfaces. This issue was attributed to the overestimation of Coulombic interactions and was corrected using reactive molecular dynamics simulations. The interfacial entropy change (from bulk to interface) of liquid molecules was calculated for different alumina surfaces. It was found that surfaces with high interfacial entropy change correlate with a high interfacial concentration of water molecules and a dominant contribution from in-plane modes to thermal transport. Conversely, highly mobile water molecules in low entropy interfaces concurred with the out-of-plane modes contributing the most to the energy transport. The hydroxyls on the passivated solid interface led to the formation of hydrogen bonds, and the density number of hydrogen bonds pe...
