The effects of oxygen pressure on the discharge performance of potassium-oxygen batteries

Jannis Kuepper et al.

Summary: This study evaluates the influence of oxygen partial pressure on the discharge performance of potassium-oxygen battery (KOB). It is found that low oxygen partial pressure leads to insufficient oxygen transport and reduced discharge performance, while high oxygen partial pressure improves discharge performance and prevents side reactions. These findings suggest that a high-pressure supply of pure oxygen can further increase the cell performance of KOB.

A Modeling Study of Discharging Li-O2 Batteries With Various Electrolyte Concentrations

Fangzhou Wang et al.

Summary: In this study, a model was developed to investigate mass transfer in discharging Li-O-2 batteries, revealing that Li+ determines discharge capacity in dilute electrolytes while O-2 supply is dominant in concentrated electrolytes. The highest discharge capacity was achieved with a balanced mass transfer of O-2 and Li+ using 0.5M electrolyte.

Limited Accessibility to Surface Area Generated by Thermal Pretreatment of Electrodes Reduces Its Impact on Redox Flow Battery Performance

Katharine V. Greco et al.

Summary: Thermal pretreatment of carbon electrodes can increase electrode surface area, with electrochemical measurements underestimating the physical surface area at longer treatment times. The majority of pores are in the micropore range, with around 60% of the added surface area in subnanometer pore sizes. Solvated radii and imperfect wetting of species may hinder active species transport into recessed regions, impacting electrode performance.

PTFE Enhances Discharge Performance of Carbon Cathodes in Potassium-Oxygen Batteries

Jannis Kuepper et al.

Summary: This article demonstrates that low-cost polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) treatment can improve the discharge performance of a commercial carbon paper cathode, enhancing the performance of potassium-oxygen batteries (KOB). The study found that PTFE can improve the deposition of discharge products within the cathode, prevent electrolyte flooding in the pores, and increase discharge capacity.
