Summary: Analysis of the Current Population Survey data reveals a tightening labor market for registered nurses, licensed practical nurses, and nursing assistants, with a decline in employment and an increase in wages until June 2021. Unemployment rates remain higher among registered nurses and nursing assistants who work in nonhospital settings and belong to racial and ethnic minority groups.

Facility characteristics and costs associated with meeting proposed minimum staffing levels in skilled nursing facilities

Summary: This study examined the nurse staffing levels in skilled nursing facilities (SNFs) in the United States and estimated the costs and personnel needed to meet proposed minimum levels. The findings showed that only a small percentage of SNFs met the proposed standards, and achieving the minimum staffing levels would require substantial financial investment and targeted support for low-resource facilities. Rural SNFs in particular faced challenges in meeting all categories, primarily due to fierce competition at the county level.

Physical and Occupational Therapy Staffing Patterns in Nursing Homes and Their Association with Long-stay Resident Outcomes and Quality of Care

Summary: The purpose of this study is to examine the staffing patterns of Physical Therapy (PT) and Occupational Therapy (OT) in nursing homes and their relationship with quality performance. The findings suggest that PT/OT staff have a positive influence on resident outcomes, and the staffing patterns significantly differ across provider attributes. These findings can be used to inform policymakers about potential unintended consequences resulting from changes to Medicare reimbursement policies.
