Transition Metal Complexes as Catalysts for the Electroconversion of CO2: An Organometallic Perspective

Niklas W. Kinzel et al.

Summary: The electrocatalytic transformation of carbon dioxide has long been a topic of interest, with recent focus on it as an alternative strategy for CO2 reduction. Studies have increasingly looked at direct electron transfer and molecular transition metal complexes as catalysts. This can lead to the production of C-1 compounds as well as more complex transformations.

Through-Space Electrostatic Interactions Surpass Classical Through-Bond Electronic Effects in Enhancing CO2 Reduction Performance of Iron Porphyrins

Asma Khadhraoui et al.

Summary: Warshel demonstrated the significant role of electrostatic interactions in enzyme catalysis. The use of cationic imidazolium groups in iron porphyrin catalysts enhanced catalytic properties through stabilizing intermediates. Through-space electrostatic interactions were found to outperform through-structure electronic effects in improving catalytic performance.

The Importance of Acid-Base Equilibria in Bicarbonate Electrolytes for CO2 Electrochemical Reduction and CO Reoxidation Studied on Au(hkl) Electrodes

Giulia Marcandalli et al.

Summary: Gold is the closest to the ideal reversible electrocatalyst for CO2 electrochemical reduction, and the nature of the electrolyte crucially affects its behavior. Research has shown that CO2RR to CO is facet-dependent, with Au(110) being the most active surface, and the acid-base equilibria play a significant role in both CO2RR and COOR. The bicarbonate/carbonate couple is not only a buffering equilibrium but also a species involved in the electrochemical reactions studied.

Activating the Fe(I) State of Iron Porphyrinoid with Second-Sphere Proton Transfer Residues for Selective Reduction of CO2 to HCOOH via Fe(III/II)-COOH Intermediate(s)

Sk Amanullah et al.

Summary: The ability to tune the selectivity of CO2 reduction by first-row transition metal-based complexes through second-sphere effects has promising implications. By understanding the mechanism of CO2 reduction by iron porphyrins and designing a porphyrinoid ligand, it was possible to catalyze the reduction of CO2 to HCOOH with high yield and low overpotential. The key role of a closely placed proton transfer residue in aiding CO2 binding to Fe(I) and stabilizing intermediates was elucidated through the reaction mechanism.

Second-sphere hydrogen-bonding enhances heterogeneous electrocatalytic CO2 to CO reduction by iron porphyrins in water

Chanjuan Zhang et al.

Summary: Intense efforts are being devoted to discovering cost-effective catalysts for the selective reduction of carbon dioxide, particularly in the design of molecular complexes contributing to boosting homogeneous electrocatalytic activity. By chemically modifying electrodes with a molecular iron-porphyrin catalyst holding urea functions, researchers have achieved excellent selectivity towards CO production in water, with high effective turnover frequency values observed in comparison to similar bare iron-porphyrin analogues. This approach represents a remarkable gain in electrocatalytic performance of molecular catalysts at the electrode surface, utilizing chemical functions as molecular clefts for CO2 binding and reduction.
