Enormous Enhancement in Single-Particle Surface-Enhanced Raman Scattering with Size-Controllable Au Double Nanorings

Jieun Shin et al.

Summary: To enhance the near-field focusing around nanoscale metal particles, we designed large-sized gold double nanorings with nanoscale gaps between them. These gaps resemble hot halos where single-particle surface-enhanced Raman scattering occurs. The synthesis of these gold nanohalos was achieved using a novel strategy based on hexagonal gold nanoplates as templates. The resulting nanohalos exhibited near-field focusing, confirmed by both experimental measurements and theoretical simulation. The study also revealed a correlation between the distances of intra-nanogaps and particle sizes of gold nanohalos on single-particle surface-enhanced Raman scattering, with high enhancement factors and reproducibility.

Surfactant-free Synthesis of Spiky Hollow Ag-Au Nanostars with Chemically Exposed Surfaces for Enhanced Catalysis and Single-Particle SERS

Ziwei Ye et al.

Summary: A surfactant-free synthesis method for producing spiky hollow gold-silver nanostars with high plasmonic and catalytic activity has been reported. These nanostars have significantly enhanced functionality compared to their surfactant-capped counterparts, and can be stabilized using a weakly bound stabilizing agent for single-particle SERS applications.
