Elucidating the mechanism of the reverse water-gas shift reaction over Au/CeO2 catalysts using operando and transient spectroscopies

Marc Ziemba et al.

Summary: The reaction mechanism of the reverse water-gas shift reaction over Au/ceria catalysts was studied by monitoring the catalyst dynamics and reaction intermediates using operando and transient spectroscopies, as well as by DFT calculations. The study found that defect concentration is not rate-determinant, surface pretreatment affects CO2 reduction, and proposed an associative mechanism via carbonate and formate intermediates as the main route for the reaction.

Elucidating Active CO-Au Species on Au/CeO2(111): A Combined Modulation Excitation DRIFTS and Density Functional Theory Study

Jakob Weyel et al.

Summary: By elucidating the main steps of CO oxidation mechanism over Au/CeO2(111), this work reveals the process of CO adsorption and transformation at various surface sites, and identifies single gold atoms as the active centers for CO conversion. Using modulation excitation differential reflection infrared spectroscopy (ME-DRIFTS) combined with phase sensitive detection and density functional theory (DFT) calculations, the active species are identified and observed bands are assigned. The combination of transient spectroscopy and theoretical calculations (DFT) shows great potential in clarifying the role of adsorbates and unraveling the reaction mechanism of CO oxidation over supported gold and other noble-metal catalysts.

Changes of Pd Oxidation State in Pd/Al2O3 Catalysts Using Modulated Excitation DRIFTS

Gian Luca Chiarello et al.

Summary: Infrared spectroscopy is used to establish the oxidation state of metal-based catalysts. The baseline changes under alternate pulses of CO or H-2 and O-2 are proportional to the Pd content in Pd/Al2O3 samples. The reversible reduction-oxidation of Pd can be determined using diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy (DRIFTS) under operando conditions.

The active role of the support in propane ODH over VOx/CeO2 catalysts studied using multiple operando spectroscopies

Leon Schumacher et al.

Summary: This study focuses on the mechanistic understanding of propane oxidative dehydrogenation over ceria-supported vanadia catalysts, elucidating the crucial role of surface lattice oxygen from ceria and the indirect role of vanadia structures in increasing the overall selectivity. The synergy effect between vanadia and ceria in oxidation reactions is demonstrated, providing a basis for a detailed understanding of the role of the support in VOx/CeO2 and other supported vanadia catalysts.
