New-onset acute ischemic stroke following COVID-19: A case-control study

Fariborz Khorvash et al.

Summary: The risk of acute ischemic stroke is higher in COVID-19 patients, especially those with severe COVID-19. Certain blood markers such as white blood cell count, neutrophil count, and D-Dimer are significantly elevated in patients who develop stroke following COVID-19 infection.

Summary: During the COVID-19 pandemic, there has been an observed increase in acute ischemic strokes, particularly those related to large vessel occlusion, among patients presenting with acute neurologic symptoms. Factors such as COVID-19 infection and Hispanic ethnicity may be associated with different stroke subtypes.

Summary: COVID-19 is associated with a small but significant risk of cerebrovascular events, particularly ischemic stroke. The mortality rate is high for COVID-19-associated cerebrovascular complications, highlighting the importance of aggressive monitoring and early intervention.

Stroke in patients with COVID-19: Clinical and neuroimaging characteristics

Alberto Vogrig et al.

Summary: Acute cerebrovascular disease, particularly ischemic stroke, has been identified as a serious complication of COVID-19 infection, caused by SARS-CoV-2. Specificities in COVID-19-associated stroke cases include large vessel occlusion, multi-territory stroke, and involvement of uncommonly affected vessels. The pathogenesis of ischemic stroke in COVID-19 patients is still uncertain, but evidence suggests it may be related to cytokine storm-induced coagulopathy and endotheliopathy. Specific management challenges include difficulty in identifying stroke in critically ill patients and the need for a protected pathway for brain imaging and thrombectomy.

A case-control analysis of stroke in COVID-19 patients: Results of unusual manifestations of COVID-19-study 11

Eric Jorge Garcia-Lamberechts et al.

Summary: The study revealed a lower incidence of stroke in COVID-19 patients compared to non-COVID-19 patients. COVID-19 patients with stroke required more hospitalization and ICU admission compared to COVID-19 patients without stroke, and had longer hospitalization and higher in-hospital mortality rates compared to non-COVID-19 patients with stroke.

Characteristics and outcomes of COVID-19 associated stroke: a UK multicentre case-control study

Richard J. Perry et al.

Summary: The study found that in COVID-19 patients, ischemic stroke is more likely to occur in Asian populations, be more severe with higher D-dimer levels, and result in more severe disability upon discharge. COVID-19 may significantly modify the onset, characteristics, and outcomes of acute ischemic stroke compared to patients without evidence of COVID-19.
