Metabolic and performance responses of male runners wearing 3 types of footwear: Nike Vaporfly 4%, Saucony Endorphin racing flats, and their own shoes

Kim Hebert-Losier et al.

Summary: This study compared the running economy and 3-km time-trial performance of runners wearing Nike Vaporfly 4% (VP4), Saucony Endorphin lightweight racing flats (FLAT), and their own running shoes (OWN). The results showed that VP4 improved running economy in male recreational runners at relative speeds compared to their own shoes, but the improvements were not significant compared to FLAT. Additionally, more runners achieved better time-trial performances on the treadmill in VP4 compared to FLAT and their own shoes.

Step Frequency Training Improves Running Economy in Well-Trained Female Runners

Timothy J. Quinn et al.

Summary: The study showed that a short-term step frequency training program significantly improved running economy in well-trained female runners, resulting in lower oxygen consumption, higher self-selected step frequencies, shorter step lengths, and lower heart rates for the experimental group compared to control.Training to run at a faster step cadence may be an effective technique to improve running economy.

The between-day repeatability, standard error of measurement and minimal detectable change for discrete kinematic parameters during treadmill running

Christopher Bramah et al.

Summary: The study found good to excellent repeatability with low standard error of measurement and minimal detectable change values for trunk and pelvis kinematic parameters during treadmill running. However, there was poorer repeatability and larger measurement errors for kinematic parameters at toe off. These findings provide valuable insights for future studies on running kinematics.

Effect of gender and running experience on lower limb biomechanics following 5 km barefoot running

Hyun Kyung Kim et al.

Summary: This study found significant gender effects on lower limb biomechanics following a 5 km barefoot run, with increased plantar pressure under the lateral aspect of the foot observed in the female cohort and reduced plantar pressure under the lateral heel in the male cohort. This suggests that modified lower limb running biomechanics after 5 km barefoot running may create a different foot loading environment for female and male runners.

Recent Improvements in Marathon Run Times Are Likely Technological, Not Physiological

Borja Muniz-Pardos et al.

Summary: Since the introduction of carbon fibre plate (CFP) shoes in 2016, a significant increase in performance has been observed, leading to the breaking of various world records. However, concerns have been raised regarding the fairness and integrity of competition due to advancements in shoe technology. While changes in shoe regulations may help address the issue, a more comprehensive independent review and reform may be needed to ensure a level playing field.
