Early to late Holocene vegetation and fire dynamics at the treeline in the Maritime Alps

Walter Finsinger et al.

Summary: The study investigated local long-term timberline shifts and vegetation composition changes in the Mont Bego area of the Maritime Alps, France and Italy, using pollen, plant macrofossil, and charcoal records. Different land use phases were identified, with the timberline shifting upwards over time and fire sensitive tree species being replaced by Larix decidua.

The history of human land use activities in the Northern Alps since the Neolithic Age. A reconstruction of vegetation and fire history in the Mangfall Mountains (Bavaria, Germany)

Fridtjof Gilck et al.

Summary: Archaeological studies reveal the millennia of land use history in the cultural landscapes of central Europe and mountain pastures in the Central Alps. Research in the Mangfall Mountains on the German-Austrian border indicates that mountain pasture use dates back to at least the Iron Age, with evidence of human interaction with the environment as early as the Neolithic Age. Activities in the Bronze Age suggest a link to pasturing, highlighting the profound evidence of human interaction with the mountain environment over time.
