Confined hydration in nanometer-graded plasma polymer films: Insights from surface-enhanced infrared absorption spectroscopy

Ezgi Bulbul et al.

Summary: The study investigates the structural characteristics of water molecules penetrating into nanoporous homogeneous and nanograded siloxane plasma polymer films over a 24-hour timescale. It is found that chemically graded PPFs significantly change the average interfacial water orientation, with diffusion of water through the hydrophobic matrix leading to deprotonation of matrix silanol groups upon connection to the aqueous environment. The presence of the subsurface vertical amphiphilic gradient amplifies these effects, while enhanced water uptake in oxygen-plasma modified graded PPFs masks such effects.

Experimental study of recombining nitrogen plasmas: II. Electronic population distributions and nonequilibrium radiation of atoms

The densities of excited nitrogen atoms were found to follow Boltzmann distribution for low-lying energy states and closer to Saha-Boltzmann distribution for high-lying states, consistent with previous predictions. Comparisons with a two-temperature model showed underestimations in measured densities, indicating that a single electronic temperature model is insufficient to predict the measurements. The measured radiation from the recombining plasma was significantly stronger than equilibrium radiation, with the 2-T model estimates still underestimating the actual radiation levels.
