Photons or Electrons? A Critical Comparison of Electrochemistry and Photoredox Catalysis for Organic Synthesis

Nicholas E. S. Tay et al.

Summary: Redox processes play a crucial role in synthetic methods involving electrochemistry and photoredox catalysis. Both approaches offer access to high energy intermediates that allow for unconventional bond formations. However, while they provide similar intermediates, electrochemistry and photoredox catalysis differ in their physical chemistry principles. Understanding these differences is essential for designing new transformations and bond disconnections.

Binary Au-Cu Reaction Sites Decorated ZnO for Selective Methane Oxidation to C1 Oxygenates with Nearly 100% Selectivity at Room Temperature

Lei Luo et al.

Summary: The study found that using ZnO catalyst with highly dispersed dual Au and Cu species enables efficient and selective conversion of methane to methanol and one-carbon oxygenates at ambient temperature, achieving a high apparent quantum yield of 14.1%. The synergy between Cu and Au promotes O2 activation and methane transformation, highlighting the importance of co-modification with suitable dual cocatalysts for enhancing both activity and selectivity in the process.

Hot Electron Generation through Near-Field Excitation of Plasmonic Nanoresonators

Felix Binkowski et al.

Summary: This theoretical study investigates the generation of hot electrons through the coupling of a dipole source with a nano-resonator on a metal surface. Numerical solutions of the time-harmonic Maxwell's equations and a quantum model are used to predict the efficiency of hot electron generation. Strongly confined electromagnetic fields and enhanced hot electron generation at the metal surface are observed, with the proposed nano-resonator setup showing potential for achieving high efficiencies of hot electron generation. By exciting the modes of the nano-resonator, the generation efficiency of energetic charge carriers is significantly boosted, demonstrating potential applications in tip-based spectroscopies and optoelectronics.
