Direct Proof of the Reversible Dissolution/Deposition of Mn2+/Mn4+ for Mild-Acid Zn-MnO2 Batteries with Porous Carbon Interlayers

Hyeonseok Moon et al.

Summary: Mild-acid Zn-MnO2 batteries are considered a promising alternative to Li-ion batteries for large scale energy storage systems due to their high safety. Through solution-based analyses, it has been directly evidenced that the MnO2 cathode operates via a reversible dissolution/deposition mechanism. The introduction of a porous carbon interlayer to entrap Mn2+ ions has been shown to significantly improve the electrochemical performance of the batteries.

Rechargeable Zinc-Electrolytic Manganese Dioxide (EMD) Battery with a Flexible Chitosan-Alkaline Electrolyte

Aswani Poosapati et al.

Summary: A high-performing flexible chitosan-based gel electrolyte with poly(vinyl alcohol) additive demonstrated excellent ionic conductivity and stability when swelled in a 5 M KOH solution, leading to the construction of Zn-EMD batteries with good interfacial contact. The batteries showed promising performance with high capacity retention, good rate capability, and a maximum specific capacity of 310 mAh/g, making them suitable for varied applications. Achieving energy densities between 150.4 and 252.4 Wh/kg, these batteries are among the first reported polymer-based alkaline electrolyte Zn rechargeable batteries with no cathode additives.
