Active repair of a dinuclear photocatalyst for visible-light-driven hydrogen production

Michael G. Pfeffer et al.

Summary: The molecular apparatus of biological photosynthesis can repair itself, while artificial photosynthetic devices can break down when their components are compromised. This study demonstrates the active repair of an artificial photosynthetic molecular device, leading to the restoration of catalytic activity. Hydrogenation of the bridging ligand was identified as the deactivation mechanism, which was repaired through the light-driven generation of singlet oxygen.

Electro-mechanically switchable hydrocarbons based on [8]annulenes

Magdalena Tasic et al.

Summary: This study presents a material based on oligomeric [8]annulene that can efficiently switch its shape upon redox changes. The material has a simple structure, stability, and can be easily synthesized. The switching in the oligomeric structures leads to multiple defined states, which can be characterized using electrochemical, NMR, and optical methods. The material shows stable electromechanical responsivity and the ability to relay electrons stepwise through a (pseudo-conjugated) pi-system in partially reduced structures, making it a practical platform for developing new responsive materials and switches based on [8]annulene cores.

Photophysics of Ruthenium(II) Complexes with Thiazole π-Extended Dipyridophenazine Ligands

Martin Kaufmann et al.

Summary: Transition-metal-based donor-acceptor systems can produce long-lived excited charge-transfer states by visible-light irradiation. The excited-state dynamics of the novel ruthenium(II) polypyridyl type complexes Ru1 and Ru2 were studied, revealing the presence of two excited-state branches with short-lived and long-lived excited states. Additionally, the complexes exhibit long-lived dual emission attributed to emission from different energy levels.

Microsecond Photoluminescence and Photoreactivity of a Metal-Centered Excited State in a Hexacarbene-Co(III) Complex

Simon Kaufhold et al.

Summary: The photofunctionality of the cobalt-hexacarbene complex was investigated using time-resolved optical spectroscopy. The complex exhibited weak but remarkably long-lived orange photoluminescence, assigned as a rare case of luminescence from a metal-centered state in a 3d(6) complex. Singlet oxygen quenching supported the assignment of the emitting state as a triplet metal-centered state.

Bifurcation of excited state trajectories toward energy transfer or electron transfer directed by wave function symmetry

Paola S. Oviedo et al.

Summary: This work investigates the concept of engineering differential wave function overlap between excited states within a molecular chromophore to control excited state wave function symmetries, which leads to differential orbital overlap and low-energy trajectories within the excited state surface. By exploring two donor-acceptor assemblies, it was found that visible light absorption can prepare excited states with different wave function symmetry, allowing for energy transfer and backelectron transfer. The presence of kinetic barriers prevents excited state equilibration, providing a strategy to avoid energy dissipation in energy conversion or photoredox catalytic schemes.

Summary: This study presents, for the first time, a systematic investigation on the use of 2D correlation analysis in the field of femtosecond transient absorption spectroscopy. The results demonstrate that TA-2DCOS is a model-free approach that can effectively analyze excited state kinetics in fs-TA data sets, offering potential as an alternative method to traditional approaches.

Element-specific investigations of ultrafast dynamics in photoexcited Cu2ZnSnS4 nanoparticles in solution

Christian Rein et al.

Summary: This study examines ultrafast, light-induced dynamics in copper-zinc-tin-sulfide (CZTS) photovoltaic nanoparticles through optical and x-ray transient absorption spectroscopy, revealing a rapid shift of electron density away from copper sites and the formation of a stable charge-separated and thermally excited structure. These findings, combined with density functional theory calculations, offer new insights into the structural and electronic dynamics of CZTS absorbers for solar cells.

Influence of the Protonation State on the Excited-State Dynamics of Ruthenium(II) Complexes with Imidazole π-Extended Dipyridophenazine Ligands

Carolin Muller et al.

Summary: Researchers explored the photophysical properties of pi-extended Ru-dppz systems with red-shifted visible absorption maxima, finding that the complexes Ru-im and Ru-mim exhibited desirable traits for photocatalytic processes with strong visible absorbance and long-lived excited states under specific pH conditions. However, protonation at pH <= 2 caused a decrease in excited-state lifetimes and emission switch-off.
