Summary: This study synthesized primary evidence from Africa for palliative care needs among patients and families with serious illness, revealing that HIV/AIDS and cancer patients in Africa have the most common palliative care needs, with context-specific needs including physical, psychological, social and practical, and spiritual aspects. Health literacy is identified as a crucial need to ensure the benefits of palliative care can be achieved at the patient level.
