Multiple Motor Learning Processes in Humans: Defining Their Neurophysiological Bases

Danny Spampinato et al.

Summary: Learning new motor behaviors involves multiple distinct neural substrates, which can be understood through formation of internal models and positive reinforcement. Noninvasive brain stimulation techniques can provide insights into the underlying motor learning processes. Different physiological mechanisms contribute differently to recalibrating previously learned movements and acquiring new motor control policies, with contributions changing based on the time course of learning and type of behaviors being learned.

Safety and recommendations for TMS use in healthy subjects and patient populations, with updates on training, ethical and regulatory issues: Expert Guidelines

Simone Rossi et al.

Summary: This article is based on a consensus conference held in Siena, Italy in October 2018, aiming to update safety guidelines for the application of transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS). New emerging issues discussed include safety concerns with recently developed stimulation devices, novel scenarios of TMS applications, and ethical considerations regarding neuroenhancement.

Large-scale analysis of interindividual variability in single and paired-pulse TMS data

Daniel T. Corp et al.

Summary: This study brought together data from 687 healthy participants across 35 studies to identify factors influencing responses to single and paired-pulse TMS, with variables like target muscle, neuronavigation use, and TMS machine significantly predicting TMS amplitude. Specific recommendations were provided to minimize interindividual variability in TMS data, aiming to increase standardization of methods and utility of TMS techniques.

Brain activity during real-time walking and with walking interventions after stroke: a systematic review

Shannon B. Lim et al.

Summary: Investigations into real-time brain activations during walking post-stroke have shown differences in brain activation compared to healthy individuals, with different components of gait leading to different brain activations. Asymmetrical activations during gait were closely related to performance asymmetry, while hyperactivations often decreased with walking interventions and improved walking performance.

Non-invasive brain stimulation in modulation of mental rotation ability: A systematic review and meta-analysis

Jitka Veldema et al.

Summary: This systematic review and meta-analysis examined the effects of different types of non-invasive brain stimulation on mental rotation ability. Results showed a beneficial effect of anodal tDCS and tACS, while cathodal tDCS had no effect. The small effect sizes obtained in most rTMS experiments require careful interpretation.

Protocols for inducing homeostatic plasticity reflected in the corticospinal excitability in healthy human participants: A systematic review and meta-analysis

Priscilla G. Wittkopf et al.

Summary: The study aimed to investigate the effect of homeostatic plasticity induction on MEP in healthy participants. It was found that two blocks of stimulation at the primary motor cortex could produce a homeostatic response within 30 minutes. Two blocks of inhibitory stimulation at the primary motor cortex with no stimulation interval between blocks produced an opposite homeostatic response.

Summary: This study examined the effects of anodal trans-cranial direct current stimulation on spasticity and muscle activity in stroke patients, demonstrating a significant reduction in wrist flexor spasticity and increased muscle activity during active flexion and extension.
