To deconvolve, or not to deconvolve: Inferences of neuronal activities using calcium imaging data

Tong Shen et al.

Summary: This article compares the performance of using calcium traces and deconvolved spike trains for clustering, principal component analysis (PCA), and population decoding. The results show that estimated spike trains outperform calcium trace data in cluster analysis and give comparable results in population decoding. The PCA results from calcium trace data may better reflect the underlying neuronal ensembles. Decoding capability can be improved by using denoising or smoothing methods.

Inferring thalamocortical monosynaptic connectivity in vivo

Yi Juin Liew et al.

Summary: This study introduces a statistical framework for inferring synaptic connectivity based on experimentally recorded data, setting the stage for large-scale assessment of synaptic connectivity within and across brain structures. By identifying and assessing potential monosynaptic connectivity across neuronal circuits from population spiking activity, this framework will help us better understand the signaling within networks that underlies perception and behavior.

Neuropixels 2.0: A miniaturized high-density probe for stable, long-term brain recordings

Nicholas A. Steinmetz et al.

Summary: The research introduces the Neuropixels 2.0 probe and newly designed analysis algorithms, enabling high-quality recordings for long time scales in small mammals. Automatic post hoc correction for brain movements allows recording from the same neurons for more than 2 months. These probes and algorithms enable stable recordings from thousands of sites during free behavior.
