Observation of latent ion tracks in semicrystalline polymers by scanning electron microscopy

Irina V. Blonskaya et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates how SEM can be used to observe latent tracks in semicrystalline polymers by embrittling a polymer specimen through controlled photooxidation and subsequent fracture. Latent tracks of Kr, Xe, Au, and Bi ions in polyethylene terephthalate and polypropylene films are observed using this novel technique, complementing other commonly used methods for comprehensive characterization of ion tracks in polymers.

Osmotic Pressure and Diffusion of Ions in Charged Nanopores

P. Apel et al.

Summary: Experimental measurements on a 24 nm pore track-etched membrane have shown that osmotic pressure and salt diffusion are quantitatively correlated with the electrostatic interactions of ions with charged nanopore walls. The surface-charge density increases with electrolyte concentration, in line with the mechanism of deprotonation of weakly acidic surface groups. Additionally, the type of cation (K+ or Li+) does not significantly affect the surface charge, indicating that binding of salt counterions does not play a major role in this system.
