Dissimilar laser spot welding of aluminum alloy to steel in keyhole mode

Rui Xiao et al.

Summary: This study investigated the dissimilar joining of aluminum alloy to steel using laser spot welding in the keyhole mode. The results showed that the defocusing amount and laser power significantly influenced the formation of the weld. The aluminum alloy was prone to welding defects, but placing a copper heat sink under the aluminum alloy effectively absorbed the heat and reduced the defects. The study also investigated the influence of laser power, defocusing amount, welding time, and shielding gas on the joint characteristics. Microstructure analysis revealed the formation of a conelike fusion zone and sparsely distributed Fe-Al intermetallic compounds. The laser keyhole spot welds achieved a combination of metallurgical bonding and mechanical interlocking, leading to improved joint mechanical properties.

Influence of porous high entropy alloy coating on wetting behavior and interfacial microstructure of Al-Si alloy on steel substrate

Min Zheng et al.

Summary: A porous FeCoNiCr high entropy alloy (HEA) coating was prepared on a steel substrate via vacuum sintering. The wetting behavior of liquid Al-12Si alloy over the coated and uncoated steel substrate was comparatively analyzed. The results showed that the porous coating enhanced the capillary force and facilitated the infiltration and spread of the liquid alloy, resulting in improved wettability and suppressed interfacial intermetallic compound (IMC) formation.

Effect of heat input on interfacial microstructure, tensile and bending properties of dissimilar Al/steel lap joints by laser Welding-brazing

Yang Jin et al.

Summary: The study found that with the increase of laser power, the fracture load of laser Al/steel joints first increased and then reached a plateau, but the laser power had limited influence on the joint's bending property due to the formation of tough FeZn10. Numerical simulation showed that the interfacial temperature varied with the increasing laser power, resulting in the change of IMCs layer.

Effect of the scanning path on the nanosecond pulse laser welded Al/Cu lapped joint

Baohua Zhu et al.

Summary: The study showed that the outer spiral laser scanning path was the most beneficial for bonding strength, achieving a tensile-shear load of up to 198 N. A satisfactory weld formation, pinning effect due to the wave structure, and continuous interfacial IMC all contributed to the highest bonding strength of the joint.

Interfacial microstructure and reaction mechanism with various weld fillers on laser welding-brazing of Al/Cu lap joint

Zhenglong Lei et al.

Summary: The study investigated the influence of pure Al, Al-Si, and Zn-Al weld fillers on the microstructure and mechanical properties during lap laser welding-brazing of Al to Cu. It was found that the Zn-Al weld filler effectively limited the formation of the Al2Cu brittle phase, enhancing the mechanical properties and strength of the Al/Cu joint.
