Natural history-guided omics reveals plant defensive chemistry against leafhopper pests

Yuechen Bai et al.

Summary: This study reveals a nonhost resistance mechanism of plants against herbivores through genomic, transcriptomic, and metabolomic analysis. The results show that a module triggered by Empoasca leafhoppers induces the synthesis of a specific compound in crop plants, which confers resistance to leafhoppers.

CONSTITUTIVE EXPRESSER OF PATHOGENESIS-RELATED GENES 5 is an RNA-binding protein controlling plant immunity via an RNA processing complex

Shun Peng et al.

Summary: CPR5 is an RNA-binding protein that modulates plant immunity by interacting with RNA processing complexes. It functions together with the NineTeen Complex and CLEAVAGE AND POLYADENYLATION SPECIFICITY FACTOR to activate plant immunity. CPR5 belongs to the Transformer 2 (Tra2) subfamily of RNA-binding proteins and is localized in nuclear speckles. It binds to RNA sequences targeted by Tra2 proteins and is involved in alternative splicing of CPR5-regulated genes.

Understanding the molecular mechanisms of trade-offs between plant growth and immunity

Jing Wang et al.

Summary: The trade-offs between plant growth and immunity are a well-known phenomenon in plants to optimize the use of limited resources. Recent advances in understanding the molecular regulation of these trade-offs at the transcriptional and post-transcriptional levels involving transcriptional factors, microRNAs, and protein modifications offer new strategies for breeding high-yield crops with enhanced disease resistance.

The CC-NB-LRR OsRLR1 mediates rice disease resistance through interaction with OsWRKY19

Dan Du et al.

Summary: A mutation in the OsRLR1 gene in rice leads to broad-spectrum resistance to fungal and bacterial pathogens, accompanied by growth reduction; OsRLR1 mediates defense response through direct interaction with the transcription factor OsWRKY19 in the nucleus; OsWRKY19 activates defense response by binding to the promoter of OsPR10.

Pattern-recognition receptors are required for NLR-mediated plant immunity

Minhang Yuan et al.

Summary: The plant immune system consists of pattern-triggered immunity (PTI) and effector-triggered immunity (ETI), which are activated by different mechanisms and involve distinct signaling cascades. PTI is triggered by microbial patterns via cell surface receptors, while ETI is activated by pathogen effector proteins via intracellular receptors.

The ZAR1 resistosome is a calcium-permeable channel triggering plant immune signaling

Guozhi Bi et al.

Summary: The study showed that the activated ZAR1 protein can form pentameric complexes in the plasma membrane, exhibiting ion channel activity dependent on the conserved acidic residue Glu11. Pre-assembled ZAR1 resistosome readily incorporated into planar lipid-bilayers and displayed calcium-permeable cation-selective channel activity. Activation of ZAR1 in the plant cell resulted in Glu11-dependent Ca2+ influx, perturbation of subcellular structures, production of reactive oxygen species, and cell death.

S-acylation of P2K1 mediates extracellular ATP-induced immune signaling in Arabidopsis

Dongqin Chen et al.

Summary: The study investigates how S-acylation regulates plant innate immunity by modulating the activity of immune receptors. It was found that S-acylation can influence the phosphorylation and degradation processes of the P2K1 receptor, affecting the intensity of immune responses.
