Parallel selection of distinct Tof5 alleles drove the adaptation of cultivated and wild soybean to high latitudes

Lidong Dong et al.

Summary: In this study, a novel locus, Tof5, was identified to promote flowering and enhance adaptation to high latitudes in both wild and cultivated soybean. Different alleles of Tof5 have undergone parallel selection, with Tof5(H1) allele being strongly selected by humans after domestication and Tof5(H2) allele being naturally selected in wild soybean. This study provides insights into the adaptation of wild and cultivated soybean to high latitudes.

A functionally divergent SOC1 homolog improves soybean yield and latitudinal adaptation

Kun Kou et al.

Summary: Understanding the genetic basis of soybean adaptation is crucial for breeding and improvement. The SOC1a gene plays a significant role in early flowering and growth habit in soybeans, while SOC1b has weaker effects. SOC1s contribute to floral induction in both leaves and shoot apex through inter-regulation with FTs. Introducing the Tof18(A) allele can improve soybean yield and optimize land use for food production.

A critical role of the soybean evening complex in the control of photoperiod sensitivity and adaptation

Tiantian Bu et al.

Summary: Photoperiod sensitivity is crucial for plant adaptation and crop production, with the J and LUX genes playing key roles in regulating flowering in soybean. The interaction between the J-LUX complex suppresses transcription of the key flowering repressor E1, indicating their central role in soybean photoperiod sensitivity. This highlights the potential for targeted breeding of soybean varieties with precise flowering time adaptation by manipulating EC and E1 family genes.

Overcoming the genetic compensation response of soybean florigens to improve adaptation and yield at low latitudes

Xiaoming Li et al.

Summary: The study identified florigen gene variants FT2a and FT5a in soybeans, which delay flowering time under short-day conditions and increase yield. Additionally, it was found that FT2a and FT5a variants have diverse origins and played distinct roles as soybean spread to lower latitudes.

Nuclear factor Y subunit GmNFYA competes with GmHDA13 for interaction with GmFVE to positively regulate salt tolerance in soybean

Long Lu et al.

Summary: The study reveals the crucial role of GmNFYA in salt tolerance of soybean, enhancing salt tolerance by regulating histone acetylation. GmNFYA is induced by salt stress and significantly enhances salt tolerance in soybean plants by inducing salt-responsive genes. Interaction between GmNFYA and GmFVE may competitively inhibit histone deacetylase, leading to the activation of salt-responsive genes under salt stress and ultimately conferring salt tolerance in soybean plants.
