Performance of a radial time projection chamber with electroluminescence in liquid xenon

Y. Wei et al.

Summary: The dual-phase xenon time projection chamber (TPC) is a leading detector technology that can detect both primary scintillation and ionization signals. Researchers have designed and tested a single-phase radial TPC (RTPC) that can directly create and detect electroluminescence in liquid xenon, simplifying the design and operation.

nEXO: neutrinoless double beta decay search beyond 1028 year half-life sensitivity

G. Adhikari et al.

Summary: The nEXO neutrinoless double beta decay experiment aims to detect the decay in Xe-136 using a time projection chamber and 5000 kg of isotopically enriched liquid xenon. The experiment has made significant improvements in detector design, simulation accuracy, and data analysis methods, leading to a sensitivity prediction that exceeds the half-life of 10^28 years. It is expected that in 10 years of data taking, the nEXO experiment will reach a sensitivity of 1.35 x 10^28 years, covering a wide range of parameter space associated with neutrino mass ordering.

Prospects of charge signal analyses in liquid xenon TPCs with proportional scintillation in the liquid phase

F. Kuger et al.

Summary: As the size of liquid xenon TPC detectors increases for WIMP dark matter detection, new solutions are needed to overcome technical challenges. Utilizing proportional scintillation in liquid xenon in a single-phase design can provide better signal resolution compared to dual-phase methods, offering advantages in precise electron identification and event discrimination. The absence of the liquid-gas interface in this approach can significantly improve energy resolution and reduce uncertainties in the detection process.

Scintillation decay-time constants for alpha particles and electrons in liquid xenon

Dominick Cichon et al.

Summary: In this paper, the dynamics of the liquid xenon scintillation process induced by O(10 keV) electrons and O(6 MeV) alpha-particles, both mixed with the xenon target, are investigated. The corresponding time distributions are obtained using the single photon sampling method, and the energy and field dependencies of the signals are discussed.

Liquid-phase purification for multi-tonne xenon detectors

G. Plante et al.

Summary: As liquid xenon detectors increase in size, new techniques are needed to maintain sufficient purity. The Xeclipse facility at Columbia University tested the removal of impurities through cryogenic filtration, improving mass flow rate. The results from Xeclipse, including oxygen removal rates for two sorbent materials, guided the design and commissioning of the XENONnT liquid purification system. This innovation enabled XENONnT to achieve high purity in a similar mass detector.

Simulations of events for the LUX-ZEPLIN (LZ) dark matter experiment

D. S. Akerib et al.

Summary: This paper discusses the simulation framework used in the LUX-ZEPLIN dark matter search project to support sensitivity projections and provide mock data for software validation. Event generators and detector response physics are highlighted for modeling background radiation and generating raw signals for digitized waveforms. Including detector response allows simulated data to be processed using the same analysis routines as experimental data.

Proposal of a Geiger-geometry single-phase liquid xenon Time Projection Chamber as potential detector technique for dark matter direct search

Q. Lin

Summary: The proposed single-phase liquid xenon time projection chamber, with a detector geometry similar to a Geiger counter, is a potential detector technique for future dark matter searches. It trades off field uniformity for less isolated charge signals, but preliminary field simulation and signal reconstruction studies show it is technically feasible with sufficiently good performance for dark matter direct searches.

Kiloton-scale xenon detectors for neutrinoless double beta decay and other new physics searches

A. Avasthi et al.

Summary: Large detectors using xenon are a key technology for current and future searches for new physics such as neutrinoless double beta decay and dark matter. Extending gas- or liquid-phase xenon detectors to the kiloton scale could enable highly sensitive next-generation searches, but the main challenge lies in acquiring enough xenon. Alternative avenues for xenon acquisition may be necessary to overcome existing supply chain limitations.
