Respiratory Syncytial Virus-Associated Hospitalization Rates among US Infants: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis

John M. McLaughlin et al.

Summary: Our systematic literature review and meta-analysis on RSV-associated hospitalization rates among US infants revealed an annual range from 8.4 to 40.8 per 1000, with a pooled rate of 19.4 per 1000. Study type significantly influenced the rates, with active surveillance studies showing lower rates (11.0) compared to studies using administrative claims (21.4) or modeling approaches (23.2).

Summary: This systematic literature review examines RSV testing patterns and finds that not all infants and children with LRTI are tested for RSV, leading to an underestimation of the RSV burden in all settings.

Unintended Consequences Following the 2014 American Academy of Pediatrics Policy Change for Palivizumab Prophylaxis among Infants Born at Less than 29 Weeks' Gestation

Mitchell Goldstein et al.

Summary: The study found that after 2014, outpatient RSV IP receipt by infants <29 wGA and <3 months old in both the Commercial and Medicaid populations declined. The relative RSVH risks for infants <29 wGA slightly increased after 2014, with the greatest increases seen in infants <3 months old and Medicaid-insured infants.

Update on respiratory syncytial virus hospitalizations among US preterm and term infants before and after the 2014 American Academy of Pediatrics policy on immunoprophylaxis: 2011-2017

Jaime Fergie et al.

Summary: The American Academy of Pediatrics stopped recommending the use of RSV immunoprophylaxis in infants born at 29-34 weeks' gestational age in 2014, as their hospitalization rates were similar to term infants. Subsequently, there was an increase in RSV hospitalization rates and a decrease in RSV immunoprophylaxis use among 29-34 weeks' gestational age infants.

Calibration of Chronic Lung Disease Severity as a Risk Factor for Respiratory Syncytial Virus Hospitalization

Yoonyoung Choi et al.

Summary: This study aimed to determine the number of days children with chronic lung disease (CLD) must be off treatment before their RSV hospitalization risk becomes equivalent to those not eligible for immunoprophylaxis. The results suggest that the 180-day threshold used to define CLD severity at season start can be shortened for children with CLD at ages 15, 17.2, and 21 months to 120 days, 90 days, and 60 days, respectively.
