Zika RNA and Flavivirus-Like Antigens in the Sperm Cells of Symptomatic and Asymptomatic Subjects

Hernan Vanegas et al.

Summary: This study found the presence of Flavivirus antigens and RNA in sperm cells of symptomatic and asymptomatic subjects within 28 days during the ZIKV epidemic, indicating potential transmission from asymptomatic males to pregnant women with consequences to the fetus. The results have important implications for public health, highlighting the possibility of nonarthropod-born, silent transmission facilitated by sperm cells.
