Monitoring Benzene, Toluene, Ethylbenzene, and Xylene (BTEX) Levels in Mixed-Use Residential-Commercial Buildings in Shiraz, Iran: Assessing the Carcinogenicity and Non-Carcinogenicity Risk of Their Inhabitants

Zahra Baberi et al.

Summary: The aim of this study was to investigate the concentration of BTEX compounds in indoor air of residential-commercial complexes and compare it with other residential buildings. The results showed that the BTEX concentration in upper residential units was higher than in control units, although not significantly. The lifetime cancer risk for benzene in upper residential units indicated carcinogenicity risk. However, the mean hazard quotient for all compounds was lower than 1, suggesting no concern about non-carcinogenicity risk. Nevertheless, it is still necessary to take measures to reduce the sources and concentration of benzene in indoor air.

Bioaccessibility of Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons (PAHs) in Grilled Meat: The Effects of Meat Doneness and Fat Content

Elliyana Nadia Hamidi et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the bioaccessibility of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in charcoal-grilled beef and chicken and found that the degree of doneness and fat content of the meats had an impact on the bioaccessibility of PAHs. The stomach had the highest bioaccessibility, followed by the small intestine, and individual PAHs had higher bioaccessibility in grilled beef compared to grilled chicken. Additionally, the bioaccessibility of PAHs increased with the increase in the degree of doneness, and there was a positive correlation between PAHs' bioaccessibility and the fat contents of grilled meat.

Short-term associations between barbecue fumes and respiratory health in young adults

Esther S. Lenssen et al.

Summary: A study involving 16 healthy adult volunteers exposed to barbecue fumes outdoors showed that short-term exposure to air pollutants emitted from barbecuing was associated with a mild respiratory response in healthy young adults, including a prolonged increase in nasal IL8 levels without affecting lung function or other inflammatory markers.

The exposures and health effects of benzene, toluene and naphthalene for Chinese chefs in multiple cooking styles of kitchens

Lei Huang et al.

Summary: Commercial cooking poses higher health risks due to greater intensity of volatile organic chemical pollutants compared to home cooking. This study highlights the importance of monitoring aromatic hydrocarbons in kitchens and investigating potential health effects on occupational exposed chefs. Improving ventilation in kitchens is also crucial to reduce health risks.

Quantitative Assessment of Organic and Inorganic Contaminants in Charcoal

Zbigniew Jelonek et al.

Summary: The study found toxic elements and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in commercial charcoal, with high concentrations of Cu and considerable amounts of elements like Ba, Mn, and Sr. All charcoals contained a wide range of PAHs dominated by five-ring PAHs, with high carcinogenicity levels and possible serious health issues from prolonged exposure to charcoal and charcoal dust.
