Biosynthesis and recycling of magnetite nanocatalysts from Fe-rich sludge

Lili Tian et al.

Summary: This study demonstrated the feasibility of recycling magnetite nanoparticles (MNPs) produced from Fe-rich sludge under anaerobic conditions using indigenous microorganisms. The biosynthesized MNPs showed similar catalytic performance to commercialized MNPs, but with high reusability after multiple cycles.

Addition of a carbon fiber brush improves anaerobic digestion compared to external voltage application

Gahyun Baek et al.

Summary: Adding a high surface area carbon fiber brush to AD reactors can effectively improve methane production efficiency, leading to increased methane generation rate and rapid consumption of volatile fatty acids, thus enhancing AD performance. The microbial community structure formed in biofilms of large-size brushes differs significantly from that in electrodes.

Comparative proteomics of Geobacter sulfurreducens PCAT in response to acetate, formate and/or hydrogen as electron donor

Monir Mollaei et al.

Summary: Geobacter sulfurreducens responds differently to various electron donors, with formate being the preferred electron donor compared to acetate, hydrogen, or a combination of both. This preference is indicated by differential abundance of specific proteins involved in key metabolic processes.

Scaling-up of microbial electrosynthesis with multiple electrodes for in situ production of hydrogen peroxide

Rusen Zou et al.

Summary: A 20-L scaled-up two-chamber MES reactor was developed and investigated for efficient H2O2 electrosynthesis, achieving high H2O2 production rate and cumulative concentration under controlled conditions. The results suggest promising prospects for industrialization and environmental remediation applications of MES technology.

Iron Cycle Tuned by Outer-Membrane Cytochromes of Dissimilatory Metal-Reducing Bacteria: Interfacial Dynamics and Mechanisms In Vitro

Sheng-Song Yu et al.

Summary: The biogeochemical cycle of iron is greatly influenced by dissimilatory metal-reducing bacteria (DMRB) capable of reducing hematite through outer-membrane cytochromes. The study reveals that electrostatic interactions and hydrogen bonds are essential for the binding process between cytochromes and hematite, facilitating structural changes to promote iron reduction. Additionally, the cytochrome coating can store photogenerated electrons like a capacitor, further driving the biogeochemical cycle of iron.
