Structural and Electronic (Absorption and Fluorescence) Properties of a Stable Triplet Diphenylcarbene: A DFT Study

Abrar Ul Hassan et al.

Summary: Chemists from Mie University in Japan have discovered a triplet diphenylcarbene with exceptional stability. A theoretical analysis was conducted using density functional theory (DFT) and time-dependent DFT (TD-DFT) to investigate its quantum chemical features. The findings indicate that the singlet-triplet energy gap and HOMO-LUMO energy bandgap decrease with increasing nucleophilicity. The electronic spectra of the carbene in different solvents were calculated, showing a blue shift in fluorescence/absorption intensities with higher solvent polarity. The carbene also exhibits promising nonlinear optical properties, as indicated by calculated values.

Effect of thiophene-based π-spacers on N-arylphenothiazine dyes for dye-sensitized solar cells

David Moe Almenningen et al.

Summary: In this study, the effect of pi-spacers on dye performance in DSSCs was investigated by synthesizing five novel phenothiazine dyes with varying numbers of thiophenes in the pi-spacer. The light absorption properties of the dye were significantly improved when the number of thiophenes was two or more. However, incorporating larger oligothiophenes proved to be detrimental to DSSC performance, with the reference dye without a pi-spacer demonstrating the best overall performance.
