Extended Lifetime of Respiratory Droplets in a Turbulent Vapor Puff and Its Implications on Airborne Disease Transmission

Kai Leong Chong et al.

Summary: The study found that in high humidity environments, the lifetime of small particles in respiratory droplets is significantly extended, allowing them to be transported much further by turbulent eddies. These findings provide insight into optimizing indoor ventilation and humidity control strategies and are crucial for mitigating the COVID-19 pandemic in the current autumn and upcoming winter.

Universality in microdroplet nucleation during solvent exchange in Hele-Shaw-like channels

Yanshen Li et al.

Summary: This study investigates the growth process of micro- and nanodroplets resulting from solvent exchange in Hele-Shaw-like channels. Experimental and theoretical analyses show that the droplet volume increases with the Peclet number and approximately follows an effective power law relationship. Additionally, a theoretical model is developed to explain the scaling issue, with the ability to collapse all data onto a universal curve.

Chemical reactions rectify mixtures composition

Emilie Guilbert et al.

Summary: This study examines how chemical reactions modify the overall concentration distribution of a product in a randomly stirred reactive mixture, revealing the intertwined effects of stretching enhanced diffusion and chemical production on the evolution of concentration levels. It demonstrates why chemical kinetics leads to a rectification mechanism when lower concentration levels grow faster than higher ones, resulting in a compression of the product concentration distribution. Experimental results illustrate this phenomenon, showing that the distribution is narrower around its mean compared to a pure, nonreactive scalar.

Chemical reaction for mixing studies

Emilie Guilbert et al.

Summary: The study presents an original chemical reaction generating a fluorescent product with tunable kinetics, suitable for investigating the interplay between molecular diffusion and reaction kinetics. By implementing the reaction in Hele-Shaw cells, different reaction-diffusion zones and product formation rates are observed, as well as a new diffusio-chemical regime. The potential interest of this reaction for studying reactive mixing is highlighted.

Positively buoyant jets: Semiturbulent to fully turbulent regimes

H. Hassanzadeh et al.

Summary: In this experimental study, a buoyant jet flow was investigated by injecting a heavy fluid into a rectangular reservoir filled with a light ambient fluid. Various nonintrusive experimental methods were used to analyze the flow characteristics governed by the Reynolds, Froude, and Archimedes numbers. The study successfully classified the flow into fully turbulent and semiturbulent regimes, further dividing the semiturbulent regime into momentum and buoyancy dominated subregimes.
