Effects of ocean acidification on the performance and interaction of fleshy macroalgae and a grazing sea urchin

Katherine A. Burnham et al.

Summary: When predicting the response of marine ecosystems to climate change, understanding the indirect effects of ocean acidification on trophic interactions is as important as studying direct effects on organism physiology. Research has shown that under acidification, elevated seawater pCO(2) may impair the growth of algae and the chemical sensing of sea urchins, but the feeding behavior of sea urchins on fleshy macroalgae may remain unaffected.

NUTRITIONAL COMPOSITION OF FOOD ITEMS CONSUMED BY ANTILLEAN MANATEES (Trichechus manatus manatus) ALONG THE COAST OF PARAIBA, NORTHEASTERN BRAZIL

Fernanda M. Rodrigues et al.

Summary: The study evaluated the nutritional composition of 31 food items consumed by Antillean manatees in the estuary of the Mamanguape River Mouth in Paraiba, Brazil. Brown algae had the highest neutral detergent fiber content, while Rhizophora mangle roots and various plant stems could supplement a fiber-rich diet. Protein content varied among different plant species, with Hypnea musciformis having the highest values, especially in the rainy season.

Seasonal changes in stress metabolites of native and introduced red algae in New Zealand

Vanessa Gambichler et al.

Summary: Intertidal algae need to adapt to fluctuating environmental factors such as salinity, temperature, dehydration, and light. In this study, two native red algal species showed different responses to solar radiation in summer, while organic osmolyte concentrations varied among species. The introduced red algal species exhibited high levels of stress metabolites, which may help explain its establishment in New Zealand.

Effects of ocean acidification on growth, pigment contents and antioxidant potential of the subtropical Atlantic red alga Hypnea pseudomusciformis Nauer, Cassano & MC Oliveira (Gigartinales) in laboratory

Fabio Nauer et al.

Summary: This study showed that the growth rate of H. pseudomusciformis decreased significantly with decreased pH conditions, even with increased availability of CO2. Additionally, the maximum quantum yield and chlorophyll a content were negatively affected by the pH reduction, while an increase in antioxidant activity was observed, indicating physiological stress.

Temporal and spatial toxicogenetic damage in estuarine catfish Cathorops spixii from a marine protected area with evidence of anthropogenic influences

T. F. Amaral et al.

Summary: The study evaluates the toxicogenetic signals in the catfish Cathorops spixii from a marine protected area on the Brazilian coast and shows evidence of contamination and varied distributions. Monitoring water properties and bioindicator species confirms toxicogenetic damage occurring over time, with a new indicator discovered in 2018.
