No Evidence of Kinetic Screening in Simulations of Merging Binary Neutron Stars beyond General Relativity

Miguel Bezares et al.

Summary: We have conducted fully relativistic simulations in a class of scalar-tensor theories with derivative selfinteractions and screening of local scales. Using advanced shock-capturing methods and a nonvanishing shift vector, we have successfully addressed the issues faced by previous attempts. Our findings confirm recent results in spherical symmetry, suggesting a partial breakdown of screening in black hole collapse. Additionally, we have observed that screening tends to suppress dipole scalar emission, but not the dominant quadrupole scalar mode. Our results indicate that quadrupole scalar signals can be as large as, or even larger than, those in Fierz-Jordan-Brans-Dicke theories with the same conformal coupling, within the strong-coupling scales that we can simulate.

A cautionary case of casual causality

Calvin Y-R Chen et al.

Summary: This study distinguishes between the concepts of asymptotic causality and infrared causality in gravitational effective field theories, and shows that the latter provides constraints consistent with gravitational positivity bounds. By investigating the scattering of gravitational waves in a spherically symmetric background, the researchers demonstrate the apparent time advances observed in the truncated effective theory can be resolved by properly identifying the regime of validity. The results indicate that neither infrared nor asymptotic causality are violated in Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet gravity, regardless of the scale.

Electromagnetic counterparts to massive black-hole mergers

Tamara Bogdanovic et al.

Summary: The next two decades are expected to witness the first simultaneous detection of electromagnetic and gravitational-wave signals from merging massive black-hole binaries. This breakthrough will revolutionize multimessenger astrophysics in the low-frequency gravitational-wave regime, providing unprecedented insights into the evolution of massive black holes and galaxies. It will also lead to novel cosmological probes and unique tests of gravity. This Living Review aims to introduce this research topic by summarizing key findings, physical processes, and ideas related to electromagnetic counterparts of massive black-hole mergers, as per the existing knowledge at the time of writing. It reviews the current observational evidence for close massive black-hole binaries, discusses relevant physical processes and timeframes, and presents possible electromagnetic counterparts during the precursor, coalescence, and afterglow stages of a massive black-hole merger. It also addresses open questions and discusses future prospects in this rapidly evolving research field.

Are parametrized tests of general relativity with gravitational waves robust to unknown higher post-Newtonian order effects?

Scott Perkins et al.

Summary: Gravitational wave observations have potential to reveal fundamental nature of gravity, but extracting information is challenging. Techniques like parametrized inspiral tests are widely used, and single-parameter tests in general relativity are robust.

Gravitational wave propagation beyond general relativity: waveform distortions and echoes

Jose Maria Ezquiaga et al.

Summary: This study investigates the cosmological propagation of gravitational waves beyond general relativity, considering scenarios where GWs interact with an additional tensor field using a phenomenological approach. Four distinct classes of interactions are analyzed, and solutions to the equations are obtained analytically and numerically. The study finds that tensor interactions can lead to modified GW signals with potentially different dispersion relations, affecting the coherence and detection of GW events. Various observational probes are discussed for detecting these tensor interactions using both individual GW events and population studies with ground- and space-based detectors.

Improved reconstruction of a stochastic gravitational wave background with LISA

Raphael Flauger et al.

Summary: A data analysis methodology was proposed for model-independent reconstruction of the spectral shape of a stochastic gravitational wave background with LISA; The improved algorithm includes a complete set of TDI channels, reducing uncertainties, avoiding local extrema in likelihood maximization, and breaking degeneracies between signal and instrumental noise; Testing with case studies showed that additional channels are helpful in various ways for the reconstruction process.

Novel Probes Project: Tests of gravity on astrophysical scales

Tessa Baker et al.

Summary: The Novel Probes Project aims to advance the field of astrophysical tests of the dark sector by connecting observers and theorists. This review focuses on tests of gravity in the weak-field regime, ranging from stars to quasilinear cosmological scales, and complements strong-field tests of gravity as well as background and linear probes in cosmology. It discusses the potential and challenges of using astrophysical probes for tests of gravity, with a focus on nonlinear dynamics and screening mechanisms in modified-gravity models.

Tests of general relativity with binary black holes from the second LIGO-Virgo gravitational-wave transient catalog

Summary: Gravitational waves are used to test general relativity in strong-field regimes, with evaluations of data consistency showing no evidence for new physics beyond general relativity. Modifying waveform parameters and constraints on Lorentz-violating coefficients have improved past limitations, while analysis of merger remnants and polarization confirms agreement with theoretical predictions.

Cobaya: code for Bayesian analysis of hierarchical physical models

Jesus Torrado et al.

Summary: Cobaya is a general-purpose Bayesian analysis code designed for models with complex internal interdependencies. It efficiently exploits interdependencies between different stages of a model pipeline, automatically caches intermediate results, and optimally sorts parameters to minimize computational costs during sampling. The code allows exploration of posteriors using Monte Carlo samplers, functions for maximization and importance-reweighting of samples, and can be extended and parallelized with minimal overhead per posterior evaluation.
